Energy Savings on Hot Summer Days

Although Arkansas has seen a rather mild summer this year compared to most the worst is yet to come. When the temperature rises so can energy bills. Here are 10 common tips on how to help better manage your electric bill this summer..

  1. Turn off lights and electronics when not in use
  2. Replace incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR LEDs
  3. Unplug devices such as phone chargers when not in use. These items will continuously draw energy even when not in use.
  4. Use smart power strips for computers/televisions. These can sense when a device is turned off or not being used and will shut off power automatically.
  5. Close blinds and drapes during the day to keep the heat out.
    1. Sun coming in heats the house which can cause the A/C to continuously run.
  6. Save up to 10% on cooling costs by increasing your thermostat’s temperature setting by seven to 10 degrees for at least 8 hours a day.
  7. Replace air conditioner filters. Clean filters lower A/C energy consumption by up to 15%.
  8. Use ceiling fans to cool the room you’re in. Feeling hot? Try turning on the fan before you kick the A/C on. Just make sure you turn it off when you leave the room.
  9. Seal it up. Make sure your windows and doors are well protected against drafts. A new bead of caulk or some weather-stripping goes a long way.
  10. Use large appliances such as a dishwasher and washer/dryer as late in the evening as possible. These appliances add heat to a home and make your HVAC system work harder.

These are just some of the many ways you can save money this summer.
