The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Department received a report on November 11th from a Saratoga resident that had been scammed out of $4,000. Sheriff James Singleton says the individual had received a phone call from someone who claimed to work for the Narcotics division of the Dallas Police Department. The caller stated that a friend needed $4,000 for bail money. The individual purchased several gift cards to total that amount and then later was told another $4,000 was needed for lawyer fees. Upon contacting the credit card company to extend his cards to send the money, he was advised it was probably a scam. One of the gift cards was redeemed at a mall in Chula Vista, California while the phone number returned from Ontario, Canada. Sheriff Singleton reminds people to never give out any personal information over the phone and to not send money when requested.
