Study Conducted to Evaluate Need of Bypass Around Washington

The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has conducted a feasibility study in Hempstead County, evaluating the need of a bypass that would be constructed on Highway 278 around Historic Washington State Park and the city of Washington. The documentation notes that a study had been requested back in the 1970’s. US Highway 278 divides the state park and during the course of a normal day, dozens of people are crossing the highway. Traffic is also sometimes backed up during large events held at the park and the study says a bypass would help route traffic around Washington. The bypass, if constructed, would be located on the west side of Washington, intersecting with 195.
