Dierks City Council Meeting
The city of Dierks is seeking a state grant for renovation of the town’s park. At Monday’s city council meeting, Mayor Ronnie Cogburn & Alderman Jaron Tipton reported on a meeting they attended October 29th at Jacksonville. Speaking to the Parks & Tourism Commission, the pair presented the city’s need for a total renovation of the park. If approved the 50/50 matching grant would be used for drainage work, lights & fencing. Tipton said city officials have been working on the request for many months…even before the July flood decimated the city park in Dierks. A grant of 482 thousand dollars is being sought. The city’s portion, 241 thousand dollars, includes in-kind work and donations. Dierks is hoping to know by the end of this year or in early January if they’ve been approved.
In other business from this week’s council meeting, Dierks Police Patrolman Zack Shankles reported on a recent undercover operation conducted by the drug task force, Howard County Sheriff’s Department & Dierks Police. Multiple arrests were made as law enforcement is working to reduce drugs in the Dierks area.
Mayor Cogburn informed council members of a complaint that has been made regarding a burn pile at the city park. Officials are discussing some possible alternatives to the current location.
