City of Dierks prepares for upcoming sewer project

This month, the Dierks City Council received an update sewer grant project.

Mayor Ronnie Cogburn stated the city will be responsible for about $1.1 million dollars of the $4.6 million dollar grant. He said the project will replace all of the old sewer lines that have been in the ground since the 1960’s. Cogburn said he met with the engineer this week and they hope to start the project in 2024.

Cogburn also informed the council that the city has been denied a grant to install lights on the ball fields in the Dierks City Park. He said the quote for the lights was over $400,000 and the city can not afford that price tag. Cogburn said the city plans to build a fence around the other ball field this year and continue searching for a way to have lights installed.

Cogburn also reported Carver Construction will start working soon to replace the bridge on 3rd Street.

Council members voted to hire Brock Haley as a new police officer. Cogburn said Haley will start on Monday, August 28. He said Haley has over 10 years of experience with the Hope Police Department.

Council members were also informed that Roddy Smith will be the new fire chief for the Dierks Volunteer Fire Department and Chase Quinn with be the assistant chief.

Cogburn said the council is considering paying members of the fire department on a per call response basis.
