Johnny Wilson Recognized for Over 50 Years as the “Voice of the Scrappers” Part Two

A familiar voice at Nashville Scrapper football games has been honored for a lifetime of dedication to high school athletics. Johnny Wilson, affectionately known as the “Voice of the Scrappers,” recently received a Citation from the Arkansas Activities Association** for over 50 years of service to sports in Nashville and throughout Arkansas.

Wilson shared that their region is Activity District 7 and reflected on just how long he’s been behind the microphone, calling games and supporting student-athletes alongside his longtime press box partner Eddie Cobb, who has worked beside him since their very first season in the early 1970s.

When asked what keeps him coming back each fall, Wilson said it’s simply his love for the game and his passion as a lifelong sports fan.

He also talked about his background in education and shared how he first came to Nashville—a move that would lead to decades of involvement both in the classroom and at the stadium.

Reflecting on his years in education, Wilson said teaching offers a unique opportunity to “influence the future, to influence the kids.”

Wilson also recalled the fall of 1972, when Joe Goodrum offered him the role of public address announcer at the football stadium—an opportunity that marked the beginning of a lasting tradition.
