Murfreesboro School Board Reviews Budget, Academic Progress, and Community Partnerships

Recently, the Murfreesboro School Board held their regular monthly.

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent Tanya Wilcher opened the meeting with a message of gratitude to local businesses that have stepped up to support the district’s livestreaming services. Sponsors include Delight Bank, Harris 10-Minute Lube, ACE’s Rental Building, First State Bank, Pike County Farm Bureau, and Henderson Graphics. Wilcher also recognized Diamond Bank for partnering with the district to construct a new batting cage at the baseball and softball complex.

Wilcher shared that the district received e-rate funding for the year, following an application submitted last year. The district was approved for $112,892 in funding, of which 15% ($17,324) will be paid through other special funding sources. These funds will go toward upgrading the school’s campus network infrastructure, including new switches and battery backups.

She also announced that the Homecoming Parade has been rescheduled for this Friday.

Academic Reports

MHS PrincipalDavey Jones presented on behalf of Murfreesboro High School, discussing recent changes to the school’s state-issued letter grade. While last year the high school received a projected B, this year it has dropped to a C — despite improvements in test scores. Jones explained that the letter grades now also include metrics such as graduation rates and the percentage of students enrolled in concurrent college courses. He emphasized that the high school remains committed to continued academic progress.

MES PrincipalJames Riley shared the Murfreesboro Elementary School (MES) Academic Report. He highlighted the enrichment classes now offered to students who scored a Level 3 or above on state tests. These classes include Robotics, Esports, Educational Minecraft, Crochet Club, and Podcasting.

Riley also announced the launch of the Rattler Run Fundraiser, where all students can participate by simply registering. Additionally, MES has founded its own Elementary Beta Club this year, and students will have the opportunity to participate in state conventions and competitions.
