Historic Dutch Oven Cooking Class at Prairie D’Ane Battlefield

The Nevada County Depot Museum invites the community to experience the taste of history at a special Dutch oven cooking class on Saturday, November 15, at the scenic Prairie D’Ane Battlefield.
Led by culinary historian Sheila Ballard, this hands-on workshop will immerse participants in the art of open-flame cooking using traditional cast iron Dutch ovens. Attendees will prepare a complete meal — including a main dish, side, bread, and dessert — all crafted from historical recipes that showcase the region’s rich culinary heritage.
Prairie D’Ane Battlefield, managed by the Nevada County Depot Museum, spans more than 800 acres of preserved natural prairie. Open year-round, the site offers fishing ponds, walking trails, and interpretive signs that highlight its historical significance.
The Dutch Oven Cooking Class begins at 11 a.m. and costs $25 per person. Preregistration is required, as space is limited. To reserve your spot, visit TheDepotMuseum.org/Events
