Committee Formed to Gather Signatures for Wet/Dry Ballot Issue in Howard County

During recent Developing Howard County meetings, board members have been reviewing community feedback gathered from surveys completed by county residents. One of the top recommendations to emerge was allowing the sale of alcohol in Howard County—a move supporters believe would help attract new businesses, retain existing ones, and prevent tax dollars from flowing to neighboring counties where alcohol sales are already legal.

To explore this issue further, a new subcommittee has been formed under the name Developing Entertainment for Howard County. The committee is chaired by Gail Hearnsberger.

According to the group’s Facebook page, the committee will begin gathering signatures to place the wet/dry question on an upcoming ballot—giving residents the opportunity to decide the matter themselves. Their post emphasizes that the effort “is not about alcohol,” but rather about strengthening the local economy and creating new opportunities for growth within Howard County.

The committee states that if Howard County were to become “wet,” the area could see increased foot traffic for local businesses, more restaurant and retail development, and greater interest from visitors in neighboring counties and states.

The Developing Entertainment for Howard County mission statement highlights its goal of “building a better future for Howard County.” The group says it is committed to promoting progress, opportunity, and local control, asserting that “Howard County deserves a chance to thrive.”
