Traffic Stop on Interstate 30 Leads to Drug Arrest in Nevada County

A routine traffic stop in Nevada County early Monday morning resulted in multiple drug charges for a Tennessee man.
According to authorities, the stop occurred around 12:11 a.m. on March 16 along Interstate 30 eastbound near the 53 mile marker. The driver was initially observed traveling 98 miles per hour in a 75 mile per hour zone near the 42 mile marker, and later recorded at 94 miles per hour near the 52 mile marker. Both speeds were confirmed using in-car radar.
The driver, identified as 34 year old Charles Ray Jr. of Memphis Tennessee, was contacted and advised of the reason for the stop. Authorities say he did not provide a valid explanation for the excessive speed.
During the stop, the officer reported detecting the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Dispatch also advised that Ray had prior convictions related to marijuana possession.
Before a search was conducted, Ray informed the officer that there was approximately one ounce of marijuana in the vehicle. A subsequent search led to the discovery of multiple bags of marijuana, along with four and a half hydrocodone tablets located in a bottle in the center console.
Ray was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, and speeding.
He is currently being held at the Nevada County Detention Center pending his first judicial appearance.
