Governor Sanders Orders Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of Sergeant Charles Edwin Beaty
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across Arkansas on today, to honor the life and service of Sergeant Charles Edwin Beaty, whose remains will be laid to rest in his home state.
Born in Craighead County on April 14, 1924, Sgt. Beaty served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at the Chosin Reservoir, where he fought valiantly in the face of a Chinese Communist attack. Sgt. Beaty was reported missing in action on December 3, 1950, after his unit was forced to withdraw.
Following a historic summit in 2018 between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, North Korea returned the remains of U.S. service members, including Sgt. Beaty. His remains were later identified.
Sgt. Beaty, who earned numerous honors including a Purple Heart and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, will be buried in Arkansas, surrounded by family and a community that honors his courage and sacrifice.
Governor Sanders issued the proclamation, directing flags to be lowered from sunrise to sunset on the day of his interment, in remembrance of his service and dedication to the nation.
