Vanessa Weeks Discusses Opportunity Zone Nominations and Economic Development

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to speak with Howard County Economic Development Director Vanessa Weeks about the nomination portal being open for eligible Arkansas census tracts to be considered for Opportunity Zone status.
Weeks explained what an Opportunity Zone is and how the designation can help encourage investment and economic development in qualifying communities.
She also discussed some of the questions included on the nomination application and what information is needed during the submission process.
Weeks added that her office is currently working to attract a project to Howard County.
Weeks said the nomination period is open through July 31, 2026.
To conclude the interview, Weeks invited the public to attend the Howard County Economic Development monthly meetings, noting that this month’s meeting is scheduled for July 22.
Following the nomination period, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders will submit eligible Arkansas census tracts to be designated as Opportunity Zones. The 78 Arkansas Opportunity Zones certified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
