Citizens Explore Plans for Main Street Pocket Park, Downtown Revitalization

Community leaders, downtown business owners and local organizations gathered Thursday afternoon to discuss plans for a proposed pocket park at 108 N. Main St. and to begin laying the groundwork for a broader downtown revitalization effort.

The meeting, organized by Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dena Tollett, brought together 11 representatives from the chamber, the City of Nashville, SWA Paws, the Howard County Historical Society and downtown businesses to share ideas for transforming the vacant lot into a welcoming public gathering space.

The proposed pocket park revives an idea first introduced in 2024 by Howard County Historical Society member Jonathan Canaday, who sought to establish the D.A. Hutchinson Pocket Park at the site of Dr. D.A. Hutchinson’s former medical office. In addition to his medical practice, Hutchinson served as Nashville’s first mayor, making the location historically significant. The project has now gained new momentum through the efforts of Tollett and Chamber volunteer Jonathan Lance.

Tollett and Lance are preparing a grant application to fund the approximately $50,000 project. Preliminary plans include constructing a small performance stage, installing outdoor seating with round tables and umbrellas, adding murals to the surrounding walls and placing decorative planters throughout the space. Greg Furr of Quality Construction has provided a preliminary construction estimate for the project.

In addition to discussing the pocket park, attendees explored the creation of a downtown revitalization board that would operate as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. The proposed board would be eligible to pursue grants and other funding opportunities aimed at preserving and enhancing Nashville’s downtown while protecting its historic district designation.

Additional meetings are being planned as organizers continue developing both the pocket park project and the proposed downtown revitalization board.
