Mineral Springs, Dierks Councils Address City Business

The Mineral Springs City Council was unable to hold its regular monthly meeting Monday night because a quorum was not present.

Council members plan to reconvene Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the council room to conduct the city’s business.

Meanwhile, the Dierks City Council was able to conduct its regular meeting Monday night, although Mayor Ronnie Cogburn was not in attendance.

Police Chief John McKee presented an ordinance concerning the operation of ATVs, motorcycles, go-karts and bicycles on city streets by children under the age of 14. The proposed ordinance was tabled to allow council members additional time to review it. The ordinance is expected to be presented again at the September council meeting.

Fire Chief Chase Quinn reported that Engine 2 is currently out of service due to mechanical problems. Quinn said he had received two bids for repairs. One estimate was more than $9,000, while Kenworth submitted a bid of more than $30,000.

Quinn said he and Mayor Cogburn had agreed to file an insurance claim with the city’s insurance company to help cover the repair costs. Engine 2 is insured for $100,000.

The city of Dierks currently has an ISO rating of 6. Quinn reported that, despite Engine 2 being out of service, the fire department still has five trucks in operation.

City Clerk-Treasurer Sherri Edge read a resolution requesting a matching grant in the amount of $10,866. The City Council approved the resolution, allowing the city to move forward with the grant application.
