Judge Jessica Steel Gunter Sworn In for Another Term as State District Court Judge
District Court Judge Jessica Steel Gunter, a Nashville native, was recently sworn in for another term as State District Court Judge for the 36th Judicial District, which includes Howard, Pike, Little River, and Sevier Counties.
In part one of our discussion, Judge Gunter, who comes from a long line of public servants, took a moment to introduce her family, to reflect on her family’s legacy and share her deep family ties and the influence they had on her decision to enter the legal field.
The ceremony was a meaningful occasion, with Judge Gunter being sworn in by Circuit Judge Bryan Chesshir.
Prior to the event, Judge Chesshir arranged a special tribute by displaying a portrait of Gunter’s late grandfather, Bobby Steel, who served as Circuit Judge in Howard County from 1955 to 1978. The portrait was placed on the wall of the courthouse, positioned perfectly behind Gunter as she took the oath of office. Judge Gunter expressed it meant so much to her to have her grandfather’s presence felt in such a significant moment of her career.
Gunter shared that her grandfather taught Sunday School and dedicated his Saturdays to preparing Bible lessons, often reflecting on how to apply their teachings to the challenges of today’s problems.
Judge Gunter also spoke about what she believes are essential qualities for a judge to possess. She emphasized fairness, integrity, and compassion as core values that guide her in her role.
Judge Gunter’s swearing-in marks a new chapter in her career, building on the rich history of her family’s service in the local government. In part two of our interview, we’ll delve deeper into her family’s continued influence on governance in Howard County and her vision for the future of the 36th Judicial District.
