U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Urges Boating Safety This Fall

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District is reminding boaters, anglers and hunters to wear life jackets while enjoying area lakes and rivers this fall.

The warning follows several serious boating incidents since Labor Day, including four deaths on waterways managed by the district.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 87 percent of recreational boating drowning victims in 2024 were not wearing life jackets.

Officials warn that colder water temperatures increase the risk of cold water shock, even for experienced swimmers.

Boaters are encouraged to wear properly fitted life jackets, check weather conditions, avoid alcohol and notify someone of their plans before heading out.
