Arkansas Officials Warn of Powerful Synthetic Opioid After Southwest Arkansas Overdose Death

Arkansas drug officials are warning about a powerful synthetic opioid after it was linked to an overdose death in Southwest Arkansas.

According to reporting published Thursday by Axios, Arkansas Drug Director Thomas Fisher says cychlorphine was detected in two fatal overdoses in the state during the first half of 2026. One death occurred in Southwest Arkansas and the other in Central Arkansas. Officials have not released the victim’s identity or the county where the Southwest Arkansas death occurred.

Cychlorphine is a highly potent synthetic opioid that poses a serious overdose risk. The substance has also been identified in two additional drug-related criminal investigations in Arkansas.

Officials are also monitoring carfentanil, another powerful synthetic opioid that has been linked to four overdose deaths in Central Arkansas this year.

The warning comes as overall overdose deaths in Arkansas have declined. The state recorded 365 confirmed overdose deaths in 2025, down from 438 in 2023.

Despite that decline, officials say the emergence of powerful synthetic opioids remains a serious public health concern.
