South Pike County School Board Honors Outgoing Member and Reviews Spring Activities
The South Pike County School Board held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 22, with a full agenda of updates on academics, athletics, and personnel.
Superintendent Tanya Wilcher opened her report by recognizing Scott Maroon during what marked his final official meeting as a board member. Wilcher publicly thanked Maroon for his dedicated service and contributions to the district.
As the school year nears its end, Wilcher also shared key dates on the calendar:
- Kindergarten and 6th Grade Graduation will be held on May 7,
- Murfreesboro High School Graduation is set for May 13,
- The last day of school is May 15,
- And the Spring Sports Banquet will take place on May 20.
Academic updates were provided by Murfreesboro Elementary Principal James Riley in the absence of Davey Jones, who was attending to administrative duties at a softball game. Riley spoke about ongoing spring testing, the kickball testing tournament, and shared encouraging news that K-6 enrollment has increased from 360 to 382 students compared to last year.
He also discussed the anticipated “C” letter grade for Murfreesboro Elementary School, explaining what the rating reflects and how the school plans to improve upon it moving forward.
Despite the challenges, Riley highlighted a major achievement—MES is the only Certified Kindness School in Arkansas. The school will be featured on the Dawson Co-op’s podcast on May 13, bringing statewide attention to its positive efforts in student culture and well-being.
