Curtis speaks to local Rotarians about Special Education
Rotary club met Wednesday with speaker LaDonna Curtis presenting. Curtis spoke about what education looks like for those that receive special education services. Curtis said that approximately 14% of the Nashville school district’s students receive SOME form of assistance in their day to day activities. The goal behind these services is to facilitate equal learning opportunities where possible by engaging the child’s specific education needs.
The process to identify what those needs are can be a rigorous one. It often includes the parents or immediate family members of the student to help teachers and facilitators better understand what the needs of the student are. Nashville has 13 trained special education teachers within its district to help in this endeavor.
