Authorities Release Names in Fatal Ashdown Shooting Investigation

ASHDOWN — Additional information has been released regarding a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this week in Ashdown.

As previously reported, officers with the Ashdown Police Department and deputies with the Little River County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 600 block of Brodie Lane at approximately 6:25 a.m. on June 9 following a report of a shooting.

According to information released by the Little River County Sheriff’s Office yesterday, authorities identified the victim as 35-year-old Derrick Burgess. Investigators said Burgess was found near the carport of the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead before emergency medical personnel arrived.

Officials also identified the individual taken into custody at the scene as 49-year-old Summer Grimes.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Ashdown Police Department with assistance from the Arkansas State Police, the 8th South Drug Task Force, and the 9th West Drug Task Force.

Authorities reported that multiple search warrants have been executed since the incident. During those searches, investigators recovered a significant number of firearms as well as illegal narcotics.

Law enforcement officials continue to gather evidence and have not released additional details regarding possible charges. Investigators emphasized that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The case remains under investigation.
