Report Shows HMH is a major driver of local economy

Nashville, Ark., January 2019 – A report distributed January 28 by Howard Memorial Hospital in partnership with the Arkansas Hospital Association compiles data on employment, payroll, purchasing and capital spending to illustrate the central role Howard Memorial plays in the economy of Howard County.

According to the report, the total estimated annual economic impact of Howard Memorial Hospital in Howard County is $33,681,000. It provides nearly 200 jobs, with an annual combined payroll expenditure of $10,919,000. These dollars, earned by hospital employees, generate approximately $17,574,000 in economic activity, which creates an additional estimated 150 jobs. These totals – when considered alongside the impact of capital spending of Howard Memorial Hospital, estimated at $9,350,000 per year, and the impact of other non-salary expenditures, estimated at $15,049,000 per year – indicate that Howard Memorial Hospital is crucial to the state’s economic viability.

Recognized much less often are the contributions hospitals make to local economies and to the state economy, through the people they employ and the impact of their spending. As part of this larger picture, Howard Memorial Hospital is critical to the economic viability of our state and community. The hospital is a major employer and purchaser of goods and services; and the health care we provide also allows people to be productive, contributing citizens.
