The Arkansas Forestry Commission re-measured Howard County’s state champion loblolly pine tree on Thursday, March 7th to see if it would qualify for the largest tree in the nation.
County Forester Justin Mallett says the tree is located on private property in between Nashville and Mineral Springs and has a “bigness index” of 357. The score is determined by measurement and includes trunk circumference, tree height and average crown spread. The circumfrence is about 16 feet and the height is 144 feet. Arkansas is home to more than 100 champion trees.
The tree fell just short of the national record.
