Resources to Help Veterans with PTSD

By U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, Arkansas’s Fourth District

I’m honored to represent many incredible men and women in uniform, both active-duty and retired. They and their families have made countless sacrifices during training and deployments. However, our nation’s veterans are not always aware of the treatments available if they’re facing facing mental health issues because of their service.

That’s why I want to make sure all Arkansans know that June is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month, a chance for us to recognize the many resources available to anyone struggling with PTSD. An estimated 8 percent of Americans – 24.4 million people – have PTSD at any given time. Within that population, one in 10 veterans receiving VA care has PTSD, so the chances of you knowing someone who is experiencing symptoms are very high.

Active Duty Military, Guard and Reserve can call Military OneSource toll-free at 800-342-9647 for assistance with PTSD, suicidal ideations, or other mental health needs. Retirees and veterans can call their local VA Hospital or CBOC for PTSD care, or the VA Suicide Hotline for Suicidal Ideations at (888) 514-8650. Another option is the Little Rock Vet Center, which gives veterans help for PTSD without requiring them to navigate through the entire VA system.

These three resources should provide coverage for any military member with PTSD. I also have two veterans on staff in my office, and they are always available to answer questions and talk with you. Most importantly, if you or someone you love is struggling with PTSD, know that you are not alone and it is always ok to seek help. Many people stand ready and willing to help veterans with the issues they face.
