The first Childress Reunion, was a project of the local NAACP Chapter, was held July 4, 1981 at the New Light CME Church. The event focused on the former school, its students and teachers. In 1983, a reunion committee was formed to direct future events. Then after the 1997 reunion, the focus changed and the Childress School Homecoming Reunion was developed. With the name change there was a chance to include people from Nashville and the surrounding area whether they attended the Childress school or not. Knowing that a lot of people come home during the reunion, the committee wanted everyone to feel welcome.
