Over 230 diamonds have been found so far this year at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro. Summer and warm temperatures may be here, however recent rainfall makes a great time to visit the state park and search for diamonds. Park Interpreter Waymon Cox explains that visitors have a better chance of finding a diamond after rainfall.
“When you have the fresh plowed soil and rain you want to generally search in the areas where that water washes through. You want to look where that heavy gravel gets left behind, normally in the lower parts of the field.”
Cox warns to bring water and to be careful while on the search field, during the summer heat. In total, over 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed at the Crater of Diamonds since the first diamonds were found in 1906.
“We’ve had over 230 diamonds found so far in 2019. That’s about 37 or 38 diamonds ahead of this point last year. Generally during the summer, it does slow down due to the heat. On average we have about 1.3 diamonds found per day right now. That is about typical for this time of year.”
Crater of Diamonds State Park will host “Photography in the Park” on Saturday, July 13 from 10 until 3. Registration is due by this Friday, June 28.
