Tackett Retires from Landfill

Upper Southwest Regional Solid Waste Management District Executive Director Max Tackett attended his last board meeting on Tuesday. Tackett is retiring after working for more than ten years in the position. The board of directors last month approved Mitch Noble as the new executive director. Changes to staff positions and salaries was approved at the meeting, which included Keith Couch as Tire Program Coordinator and Chris Hostetler as Assistant Landfill Supervisor. Noble will start with a $58,000 salary and use of a truck. Landfill Supervisor Jeff Barfield will receive a $2,000 raise to $48,000. The board also heard an update on new cell construction and approved an account to fund future growth. Tackett said that $800,000 has been setup for this new project and that the landfill will seek bids in July.

ADEQ is also requiring the landfill to dig three pairs of wells to help with testing purposes. The landfill was permitted for a term called inward grading, in which the groundwater flows inward. Barfield also spoke about making improvements to the pond discharge pump, which assists in moving storm water.

Tackett says several improvements have been made at the site over his term and that they have one of the best tire shredding programs in the state.

Tackett says the landfill is impacted by the events that happen in the surrounding communities.

Tackett says he looks forward to retirement and spending time with his family. His wife, former Nashville Junior High School Principal Deb Tackett, retired from her job last year. He says they would like to look at some volunteer options and ways to give back to the community.
