Childress School Reunion

Childress School Reunion 2019 opened Thursday, July 4th at 4pm with a Meet and Greet session from 4 to 5pm at New Light CME church, the program followed .Joe Bill Scoggins gave the Prayer, Jerline Davis welcomed the alumni. Several past Childress Kings and Queens that had been selected over the reunion years were in attendance. Fred Snell (class of 69 ) was chosen 2019 Childress King and Jimmie Lee White ( Class of 62) was selected Childress Queen. Pearlie Neal Snell and Lillian Pryor Hutchinson started the class Roll calls begining with the first graduation class of 1937. Family members represented the class which had only three members, they were, Julia Hickerson White, Roxie Booth and. Lena Hamilton Williams . The roll call ended with members of the classes of 68, 69, 70, 71 and 72. Those class members had joined the classes of Nashville High School. Integration had closed the school in 1968. Mea Heard a 2019 graduate of Nashville High School daughter of Keith Heard, Sr. and Keyshia Heard was awarded a $500 Childress Alumni Scholarship. Childress Alumni. 2015 scholarship winner Daylan Moore (2019 graduate of Harding University and will be attending Harding ”s grad school pursuing his Master’s in Professional Counseling) presented the award to Miss Heard, she plans to attend Ouachita Baptist Uuniversity .Polly White Madlock gave out door prizes. Anna Coulter led the group in singing My Country Tis of Thee and the Childress school song . Saturday’s Childress Parade through downtown Nashville began at 11am, with Childress Alumni Willie Benson, Jr, (class of 1959) as Grand Marshall. The parade ended at New Light CME with lunch. Later at the Childress Black and Gold (Childress school colors) Banquet held at Western Sizzling the group listened to songs by the Scoggins family (Janice, Mary Alice, LJ, Peggy & Don ), the Prayer and meal blessing was given by James Neal of Forth Worrh. Jerline Mixon Davis presented Anna Coulter of Haywood,CA and her brother Johnny Clay Coulter of Palto, .CA with gifts for having traveled the furthest to the reunion. Later Mary Rogers Grantham of Palm Coast, FL read an original poem, Jimmie Lee White lite candles in memory of Childress Alumni that passed away since the 2017 reunion.Utah McElroy of Tyler, TX, gave the invocation.

Additionally, committee member Janice Green and her twin Mary Scoggins from Houston compiled questions for those in attendance, asking “How much do YOU know about Childress “? Geneva Walton was mistress of ceremonies for the Friday program and Lonnie Counter of San Antonio served as master of ceremonies for the Saturday banquet. Also committee members sang a few songs for the Friday program.
