The University of Arkansas Cossatot’s basketball program announced its 2019-2020 schedule this month. Thirty-nine dates have been scheduled for the men and women’s teams, and there will be eighteen home games at UA Cossatot’s Bank of Lockesburg Gymnasium.
The first game for the men’s team will be on Saturday, November 2 at 6 P.M. in Joplin, Missouri against Missouri Southern Junior Varsity. Their first home game will be against Central Baptist College Junior Varsity on Tuesday, November 5 at 6 P.M. The first game for the women’s team will be on Thursday, October 31 at 6 P.M. in Lockesburg, Arkansas against Jarvis Christian College Junior Varsity.
This is the second year UA Cossatot has offered a basketball program for its male students. This year the college is growing its basketball program to include a women’s team. In April, the college also announced that Coach Brad Phillips would be the new basketball coach for both the men and women’s teams.
Coach Brad Phillips said, “I am really excited that we have the opportunity to play some classics and NJCAA teams. This is a great opportunity for our players to grow and get exposure as we play teams in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.” Phillips added, “The Colts and Lady Colts will be playing in the Southern Shreveport Classic on November 8 and 9, and they will also play ten games in the NJCAA Region 2.”
Kyaira Jackson is from Star City, Arkansas and plans to play for the Lady Colts this fall at UA Cossatot. She also intends to major in business and one day become an entrepreneur. Kyaira Jackson said, “I’m excited about playing for UA Cossatot and taking this opportunity to get better at my sport. Playing at the college level will allow me to take my playing skills to the next level.”
Kailynne Chaney is from Royse City, Texas and will also be playing basketball for the Lady Colts. Kailynne Chaney said, “This is a great opportunity! It is really cool to be on UA Cossatot’s first women’s basketball team and to be a part of UA Cossatot’s history! I’m looking forward to getting to know the other girls I will be playing with and putting in the practice to win some games.” Chaney added, “I’ve been doing a lot of training and preparing, and I will be ready for my first game on November 4.” Kailynne Chaney plans to pursue a career in occupational therapy. She will be taking pre-requisite courses this fall so she can eventually apply for UA Cossatot’s OTA program.
Marion McFadden is from Jonesboro, Arkansas and will be playing basketball for the men’s team. He plans to pursue an Associates of General Studies degree and explore his educational opportunities at UA Cossatot while he plays basketball. Marion McFadden said, “I’m excited to be playing with a new team, in a new atmosphere for UA Cossatot. I’m ready to compete against these teams, and move into the next step and level in playing basketball.”
As the fall approaches, UA Cossatot still has walk-on spots for the men’s team, and some scholarship positions are still available for the women’s team. Coach Brad Phillips said, “During this basketball season you can expect to see both teams play extremely hard and fast. Our teams are going to include great people who are great student-athletes.”
