Dierks High School EAST students are collecting items to host a homecoming/prom function for the Dierks Nursing home. If you have dress clothes, make-up (no lip products or mascara), old jewelry or party supplies…you can donate items at the Dierks community building or at other business locations.
The Howard County Historical Society is collecting older fire truck toys and Trailways bus toys for the Old Fire Station and Old Bus Station displays. The Central Arkansas Development Council 2019 Utility Cooling Assistance Program has started. In Howard County, apply in Nashville at the CADC Office at 103 West Shepherd Street on Monday and Tuesday from 1 until 4. In Pike County, apply at the Murfreesboro CADC Senior Center on Monday from 8 until noon or in Glenwood at the CADC Senior Center on Tuesday from 8 until noon.
Athens church of Christ will hold a Gospel Meeting September 8-11. Bible class at 10 a.m. and worship at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept 8…with a potluck lunch at 11:45 a.m. and afternoon sermon at 1 p.m. Monday through Wednesday services at 7 p.m. Sermon topics will include perserverance and encouragement for all ages.
Friday, September 13th will be the last Friday trash pick-up for Mineral Springs residents. Following that date, it will be Monday pick-up only (except holidays).
Southwest Arkansas Beekeepers Association is offering a free basic beekeeping course September 9. The three-hour course is for those who have never kept bees but think they would like to try. Participants will learn everything they need to get started – basic concepts and costs of beekeeping, equipment and supplies required and where to purchase, as well as long-term costs and time required. The free class will be taught by Southwest Arkansas Beekeepers Association President Fred Douville. Refreshments will be served. Classes will be September 9, 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Cossatot Community College in Nashville, Room 101. The Nashville Rotary club will host the hospitality table at the Howard County Farmers’ Market on September 13th from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
The Nashville City Park will hold a citywide yard sale on Saturday, September 14th from 8 until 3. All spots will be on concrete, spots are 20ft x 20ft. Open to yard sales, antique dealers, junkers, and hobby craft items. Booth space is $25 per spot. Gilliam Lake will host a shoreline cleanup as part of the Great Arkansas Cleanup, on September 14, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cleanup will be held in cooperation with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas State Parks, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and many other government and local agencies. Volunteers interested in assisting should check in at 8 a.m. at Big Coon Creek Park. Gloves and bags will be provided, volunteers are asked to please bring their own trash grabbers and life jackets. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.
Historic Washington State Park will hold a Trial By Jury dinner and drama on Saturday, September 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. Experience 19th century justice in Washington as you take part in our “Trial by Jury” series. The evening will begin with a meal at Williams’ Tavern Restaurant and then you will proceed to the trial drama. Reservations are required. The Lockesburg Lions Club and the UA Cossatot Foundation will be hosting the 3rd Annual Blue Darter Trade Days & Fall Fest at the Historic UA Cossatot Bank of Lockesburg Gymnasium. The Blue Darter Trade Days will be held Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. each day. The Blue Darter Trade Days have expanded this year, including food vendors and outdoor community yard sale space, to go along with our crafters and entrepreneurs. Vendor forms are now available for pick-up at The Bank of Lockesburg or front desk of any UA Cossatot Campus.
Ainsley’s Angels of Southwest Arkansas will hold dinner and a 5K on Saturday, September 28th at 5 p.m. at Dierks Park in DeQueen. Race participants will earn their supper upon completion of the 5K, friends and supporters can also eat a chicken dinner. Cost is $5 per plate. There will also be a live band. Race entry free is $30. The Howard County Relay For Life will hold a survivor reception on Sunday, September 29th at 2:00 at the Sunset Church of Christ fellowship building. The annual Relay event will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 5 until 7:00. There will be a chili/soup supper and a luminary ceremony at 7. A location has not yet been determined. The new 2018 edition of the Howard County Plat Book is now available for purchase at the Mine Creek Conservation District office located at 101 S Washington St in Nashville. Premium wall maps are also available. Traditional landownership maps by township and range, a landowner index for easy cross referring and other county information are all available in the new edition. This book features the new enhanced LiDAR aerial view maps opposite the landownership map pages, which is the 3D effect showing the actual topography of the land. A bereavement support group meets every Monday from 4 to 5 p.m. at Compass Behavioral Health, located on the campus of Howard Memorial Hospital at 122 Medical Circle in Nashville. The 1912 E.A. Williams Chapel and Museum in Nashville now has regular open hours. The building is open Tuesday through Friday from noon until 4 each day. There is no charge for the daily tours. The facility will also be available for after hour tours, special events, meetings, weddings, showers and Christmas parties at nominal fees. Nashville High School journalism students are selling copies of yearbooks on DVD for $10.00 per year, or all years for $100. The years 1947 – 2010 are available, excluding 1949 and 1950 (there was not a publication for those years). The Howard County Weight Watchers meet every Monday at the Howard Memorial Hospital Cafeteria in Nashville. The time has changed- weigh-in is now at 4:30 and the meeting starts at 5:00.
The Howard and Pike County Foster Parent Association is seeking donations of new or gently used clothing. The Layers of Love closet is being established to provide clothing to foster children who come into care with little or no clothing. To make a donation, drop off items at the Howard/Pike County offices.
The McCaskill Community Center hosts a community coffee every Saturday from 9 until 11. All are invited.
The historic Langley Gymnasium is now a drop-off point for the Dierks Food Bank. Please drop off any non-perishable food items and those will be donated to the food bank and needy families.
City Officers Wives are still collecting old cell phones. You can drop them off at Steely Insurance or Nashville Police Dept. They do not have to work, and all money from recycling them will be donated to Howard County Relay for Life. Call 845-2500 if you have any questions.
The Southwest Arkansas Crisis Center in DeQueen is seeking donations so that they can continue to provide services to the area. They are also seeking volunteers. They provide a number of services to the area including crisis intervention and prevention services, outreach, housing, counseling, financial assistance, criminal justice advocacy, and emergency food and clothing. The Howard County Sheriff’s Office now has an unwanted prescription drugs drop box. It is located in the lobby of the sheriff’s office and anyone can drop off their unwanted prescription drugs anytime. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The Bread of Life Food Ministry soup kitchen is open each Tuesday from 5 until 7:00 at the Legion Hut on Dodson Street in Nashville.
