Hempstead and Howard County Farmers Market

Have you seen those stands on the side of the road with all those vegetables and fruit for sale.  Do you often wonder where all of it came from?  Well Hempstead and Howard County Farmers’ Markets state in the by laws if you want to sell at market you have to grow it locally and from their farm.  The produce cannot be brought in from another state or from another farm.  Despite the increased amount of rain, Arnold Farms from DeAnn, Arkansas along with other farmers that sell at the markets have hoop houses that they grow their plants in.  Hoop houses are a type of greenhouse which enable the farmers to control the environment and start their planting as early as January this year.  The farmers take a lot of pride in what they grow and put a lot of labor and love into growing.  When they come to market, they demonstrate their love of planting and growing with the community.  All three markets have great produce despite all the rain this year.  Produce includes: cumbers, carrots, cabbage, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, eggplant, blueberries, blackberries, onion, garlic, potatoes, kale, jalapeno peppers, leeks, green tomatoes, green beans, sugar snap peas, and zucchini just to name a few.  Come out to support our local farmers.  You can also find at market handmade soaps, fried pies, cinnamon rolls, sweet breads, honey, elderberry whistles, aprons, and even farm fresh eggs.
