Nashville High School ACT School

Forty nine students at Nashville High School recently took part in a program to improve their ACT scores. ACT School is a two-week review of English, math, reading, and science, as well as test-taking strategies. The review is specifically designed to improve skills and knowledge that the ACT requires. Holly Couch, who is the district Literacy Instructional Facilitator and Dyslexia Coordinator, has conducted the program for around 15 years.

ACT School is beneficial for any student who wants to improve in some or all areas of the ACT. Some students are trying to get a high enough score for unconditional admission to a college or to avoid having to take remedial courses. Other students are trying to qualify for scholarships. With college costs rising every year, students and their parents are concerned with raising ACT scores. Over the past several years of ACT School, the average composite score increase has been over 3 points.

Litzy Pizarro (a junior at NHS): “ACT School has helped me a lot. My teachers have given me many strategies to use, and I review them at night to help me even more. The teachers are also very motivational; they’ve given me lots of confidence. I’ve already raised my scores on my practice tests by 2-3 points. I think I’ll do much better when I take the ACT on Saturday.”

Couch would like to thank the school district administration for allowing the program to continue each year.

The program ended with the administering of the ACT test on Saturday.
