The National Weather Service in Little Rock has been releasing information this week as part of the Severe Weather Awareness Week observance. One of the topics covered recently is lightning. Lightning is a hazard in all thunderstorms, whether they are severe or not. Most lightning fatalities occur in the summer (June, July and August), and the vast majority of victims are men. Arkansas ranks in the Top 10 for (1) lightning activity in the last ten years with more than 850,000 cloud-to-ground flashes per year and (2) lightning related deaths with 128 fatalities since 1959.
