USDA to provide technical assistance to rural communities

The USDA recently announced that 47 rural communities and regions will receive technical assistance to help create and implement long-term economic development plans. The development of those plans could even help counties in southwest Arkansas. All of the participants will be paired with one of four partner organizations that will provide free technical assistance for up to two years to help rural towns and regions create and implement economic development plans.

In Arkansas, the West Dumas Community Family Life Center will receive assistance in expanding e-connectivity access. The technical assistance will benefit residents of several counties including Hempstead, Howard, Little River and Sevier Counties.

Southwest Arkansas Radio sent an inquiry to find out how that would directly impact our area. USDA Rural Development Arkansas State Director David Branscum said while the West Dumas Community Family Life and Legacy Center is headquartered in East Arkansas, the center serves the entire state.

Branscum said “Through the REDI initiative, the center will make it easier to serve 20 rural counties across Arkansas by providing residents of ASC Property Management housing facilities with direct access to the center’s programs and assistance. The center will use planning assistance to expand the region’s e-connectivity access and improve economic development.”
