Bench Warrant Issued for Woman Accused of Failing to Protect Her Children From Abuse

A bench warrant has been issued for a woman formerly known as Mary Cowan, now going by Mary Fraidy Miller, following new charges alleging her failure to protect her children from sexual abuse perpetrated by her ex-husband.

Her former spouse, Pastor James “Jamie” Cowan, pleaded guilty on November 12, 2024, in a negotiated deal and was sentenced to 50 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction. Prosecutors stated Cowan had harmed multiple child victims over an extended period.

Now, charging documents show that Mary Miller was fully aware of the abuse occurring in the home. Authorities allege she made no effort to report the crimes or remove the children from harm’s way. While the children were enduring ongoing trauma, Miller reportedly remained in the residence. After separating from Cowan, she is said to have remodeled the home and settled into a new life and marriage—while the children struggled to heal.

Prosecutors also revealed evidence of educational neglect. Although the children were said to be homeschooled, records suggest little to no instruction occurred. One child, expected to be at a fifth-grade level, reportedly did not know the alphabet. None of the children are reported to have learning disabilities but are significantly behind academically.

Miller was later charged and entered into a negotiated plea deal. The charges and sentencing are as follows:

  • Permitting Child Abuse (Class B Felony) – 3 counts
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Minor – 2nd Degree (Class A Misdemeanor) – 5 counts

Under the terms of the plea:

  • Miller received 10 years of probation
  • She will serve 60 days in jail
  • She was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine plus court costs
  • A No Contact Order is in place prohibiting contact with the victims until they reach the age of 21

Authorities have emphasized the bravery of the children involved. One child’s courage to come forward was instrumental in exposing the abuse and ensuring safety for the others. All of the children are now receiving therapy and related services as part of their ongoing recovery.
