Board of Directors of the Southwest Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District approves recycling grant
Tuesday morning, the Board of Directors of the Southwest Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District met in Nashville for their quarterly meeting. The board of directors is made up of the county judges and mayors of the largest cities in their respective counties.
The participating counties include: Howard, Pike, Little River, Sevier, Hempstead, Nevada, Polk and Lafayette.
The board approved the recycling grant applications. The total application amount was $200,266. Landfill manager Mitch Nobel reported $25,000 was for an administrative grant for the Upper-Southwest Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District and $25,266 was for a transportation grant for the district. He said $75,000 would help Polk County Development Council construct a building for recycling activities and $75,000 would be used to help bring the Little River County transfer station into compliance.
Board members amended their by-laws to allow the mayors of Murfreesboro and Lewisville to be ex-officio, non-voting board members, since they were being replaced by the mayors of Glenwood and Stamps. This change was needed because Stamps and Glenwood are the largest cities in Lafayette and Pike counties.
Board members approved the 2024 budget and elected De Queen Mayor Jeff Brown as board president; Polk County Judge Brandon Ellison as vice-president and Nashville Mayor Larry Dunaway as secretary/treasurer.
Brown reported the district was doing well financially and would be a viable solid waste disposal site for some time.
The board also voted to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each quarter in March, June, September and December.
