Breast Cancer Awareness – ADH Resources
The Arkansas Department of Health issued a press release this week encouraging women to talk with their healthcare providers about getting screened as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the release the ADH points out that 1 in 8 will develop breast cancer throughout their lifetime. As the most common form of cancer and 2nd leading cause of death in women it’s important to take proactive steps in identifying problems before they arise. According to a recent study in 2018 Arkansas ranks one of the lowest, being 37th, among states for total breast cancer screenings.
The ADH offers programs within the state to serve in helping women to get tested on a regular basis. 77% of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer while in the program were found to have early-stage cancer. These opportunities provided by ADH are important due to the direct effect early detection has on treatment outcomes. These no-cost screenings and follow-up services are available regardless of ethnicity or nationality. The starting age for these services begin at age 40 which is the beginning age in which women are encouraged to start these talks with their doctor according to ADH.
