Dierks School Board Approves Move to Artificial Turf for High School Football Field

After weeks of community questions about the future of the Dierks High School football field, school officials have announced a major decision: the field will be converted to artificial turf.
Following extensive research conducted by the Dierks Athletic Booster Club in collaboration with the high school coaching staff, available options were carefully evaluated. During a special board meeting, a decision was made to proceed with an artificial turf surface, and the formal quoting process will begin immediately.
While artificial turf requires a higher initial investment, several key factors influenced the decision. Safety was identified as the top priority, along with long-term maintenance considerations and the versatility of a turf field for multiple uses. School officials noted that the selected turf option will not involve a concrete base and will include a shock pad system—features shown to reduce the risk of injury compared to traditional concrete-based installations.
Community support played a significant role in moving the project forward. School leaders expressed appreciation for the collective effort that made the upgrade possible and emphasized the pride the community will share in the new facility. The stadium upgrade project is the result of the district’s winning the T-Mobile 4G contest this past fall.
Once completed, the artificial turf field will serve as a multi-use venue for school and youth sports, including football and other athletic programs. It will also accommodate the school band, cheerleaders, and provide a wet-weather practice space for baseball and softball teams. Additional community and school events may also be hosted at the facility in the future.
School officials say the new field surface represents a long-term investment in student safety, program sustainability, and expanded opportunities for both school and community activities.
Board members also considered a district donation to the trap team, but the issue was tabled until their next regular board meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25 at noon in the administration building.
