Filing period opens; several contested races in Howard County

Nearly 30 candidates filed on the first day of the political party filing period yesterday in Howard County and several local races developed, as a result.  In Nashville, Public Works Director Larry Dunaway filed as a Republican candidate for mayor.  Local businessman Don White also filed to run as a Democrat for the mayor’s position.

On the county level in Howard County, Bryan McJunkiins filed for re-election as sheriff/collector.  Sheriff McJunkins is running as a Republican.  Ryan Gilbert also filed as a Republican candidate for the sheriff/collector’s position.  Nashville Police Officer Jackie Thomas also filed yesterday for the sheriff/collector’s position.  Thomas will run as a Democrat.

Three people filed yesterday for the office of Howard County Judge.  Those candidates include current Judge Kevin Smith, Dierks businessman John Maines, and Nashville radio stations manager & quorum court member, Brent Pinkerton.

There is already one quorum court race as of Tuesday’s filings.  Freddy Brown & Janet O’Neal are seeking the J.P. District Four seat that’s presently held by Janice Huffman, who is not seeking re-election.

On the school board in Nashville, Nick Britt filed to retain his Zone One seat.  Trey Branch also filed for that position yesterday.

The filing period will close at noon, Tuesday, March 1st.
