Funding Needed for Major Flood Repairs to city of Nashville lake spillway
City of Nashville officials recently met with the governor’s office to make a plea for funding to repair the city lake spillway. The structure was undermined during the flash flooding this summer and city leaders warn that the issue could lead to a dangerous situation if not properly repaired. Mayor Billy Ray Jones says repairs to the spillway will be costly, with an estimate of just under $200,000 to return it to pre-flood condition. However, he and Public Works Director Larry Dunaway recommend mitigation repairs that would fix the spillway in a manner that the undermining would not re-occur.
Dunaway says any of the fixes would include repairs and improvements to the intake as well.
The city has turned in other flood repair costs and bids to the insurance company. Several police cars are currently being repaired and they expect to receive about $35,000 for the flood damaged vehicles.
Materials for new bridges at Mount Pleasant Drive and 8th Street should arrive in a couple of weeks, with engineering designs and construction to follow.
The council also approved a total of $6,900 to assist two firefighters whose vehicles were damaged in the flood and not covered by insurance. The funding will be taken out of the fire department’s depreciation fund.
