Hempstead County Sheriff Fine Collection Efforts
The is increasing efforts to collect old fines. Sheriff James Singleton says approximately 15 hundred letters will be sent out December 15th to individuals who owe a balance on old fines or past due payments.
The sheriff’s department is using a state law, known as the Set-Off Debt Collection Act, to reduce the amount of unpaid fine money. Under the state statute, any pending refund claim through the Arkansas Department of Finance & Administration’s Revenue Division will be applied to the debt owed on the outstanding fines
Sheriff Singleton said his department will not hesitate in going after a state tax refund in order to collect the fine payments.
