Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents About Phone Scam

The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on alert for a telephone scam in which callers falsely claim to be members of the sheriff’s office.

According to Sheriff James A. Singleton, scammers are identifying themselves as Deputy Steven Glover and telling residents they have an outstanding warrant, missed a court appearance or owe money. The callers then attempt to pressure victims into making an immediate payment or providing personal information.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that these calls are fraudulent.

Officials said the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office will never call to demand payment, request gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or any other form of immediate payment to avoid arrest. Deputies also will not ask for personal or financial information over the phone in this manner.

Residents who receive one of these calls are urged to hang up immediately, avoid providing any personal or financial information and never send money or make a payment. Anyone with questions about whether a call is legitimate should contact the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office using its official phone number.

The sheriff’s office also encourages residents to share the warning with family members, friends and neighbors, particularly older adults, who are often targeted by scammers.

Sheriff Singleton said community awareness is one of the best ways to prevent others from becoming victims of fraud.
