Horatio Woman Sentenced for Stealing Funds from Roaring Lion Band Boosters

A Horatio woman has been sentenced to jail time and probation after admitting to stealing thousands of dollars from the Roaring Lion Band Boosters.
According to court records, 42-year-old Angela Hankins entered a guilty plea in July in Sevier County Circuit Court to felony charges of theft of property and fraudulent use of a credit card.
The case dates back to 2023, when members of the booster organization discovered that between $4,000 and $5,000 was missing from their bank account. The funds had been raised through various community fundraisers intended to support the local band program.
A review of bank statements revealed the group’s debit card had been used without authorization at several businesses, including Walmart, Amazon, Don’s EZ Pay, Pizza Hut, and McDonald’s. Investigators also found multiple checks that appeared to have forged second signatures, a violation of the group’s payment policy.
Hankins, who was serving as secretary of the organization at the time, was identified as the primary suspect. Authorities determined that a total of $4,670 had been misappropriated.
An arrest warrant was issued in September 2024, and while Hankins initially entered a not guilty plea, she later changed it to guilty in court last month.
As part of her sentence, Hankins was ordered to serve 90 days in jail, followed by six years of probation. She must also pay $4,670 in restitution to the Roaring Lion Band Boosters, along with court fines.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of financial oversight and accountability within nonprofit organizations.
