Howard County 4-H Represents Arkansas on the National Level

Howard County 4-H members recently traveled to the Texas State Fair and represented the state of Arkansas in the National 4-H Food Challenge Competition held in Fort Worth. Adelene Westfall, Alex Trombley, and Sarah Lamb comprised the team that took on this challenge. 14 teams representing 9 states competed in the day-long challenge.

Much like the popular TV show, “Chopped”, teams were given a secret ingredient to create a dish utilizing pantry items. In the 1st round “Seniors with Spatulas” as they call themselves was given pasta and $4.00 to spend. The team created a vegetable pasta dish within the 40-minute time limit which served well taking them into the final round with 5 other teams. The final round’s “secret ingredient” was sirloin steak to which the group prepared a pepper steak stir fry. Seniors with Spatulas took 5th place overall in what turned out to be the first National 4-H Food challenge for the state of Arkansas to participate in. County Extension Agent, Jean Ince, says this group worked incredibly hard practicing for both contests and she is very proud. 4-H is a youth development program of the Cooperative Extension Service that aims to focus on life skills, community service, and leadership development. Congratulations to Adelen Westfall, Alex Trombley, and Sarah Lamb for representing the state of Arkansas and making Howard County proud.
