Howard County 4-Her and Agent Selected for International Agricultural Experience in Greece
This summer, Howard County 4-Her Anna Kate McKinnon and Samantha Horn, Howard County 4-H agent and county chair, traveled to Greece through the 4-H Ag Tech Career Exploration program.
The international trip was the culmination of an exciting program designed to introduce Arkansas 4-H youth to the many ways technology is transforming agriculture and to the wide range of careers available throughout the industry.
Horn explained how McKinnon was selected to participate in the program.
Throughout the Ag Tech Career Exploration program, youth were introduced to agriculture, technology and the many careers connected to the industry. Their experiences included forestry, food science, drone technology and heavy equipment operations.
The program highlighted how modern agriculture extends far beyond the traditional image of farming. Today’s agricultural industry relies on science, technology and innovation to meet the needs of a growing population.
The trip to Greece provided McKinnon and Horn with an opportunity to see how agricultural practices and technology are used in another part of the world. The group visited agricultural businesses and explored similarities and differences between agriculture in Greece and Arkansas.
Horn said one of the most memorable stops was an aloe farm.
The trip also gave participants the opportunity to learn from agricultural professionals and gain a broader perspective on sustainable farming practices. They saw firsthand how different cultures approach agriculture and how technology and resource management can help producers work efficiently while protecting natural resources.
Beyond the agricultural experiences, McKinnon and Horn had the chance to experience Greek culture, food and history while taking in the country’s breathtaking scenery.
Through 4-H, McKinnon was able to explore agriculture close to home and then take what she learned around the world, gaining a new perspective on the industry and the role technology will play in its future.
