Howard County Declared Disaster Area Following Winter Storm

Howard County Judge Brent Pinkerton announced Thursday, January 29th, 2026, that he has officially filed a written disaster declaration with the state following the severe winter storm.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Judge Pinkerton said he had made a verbal request for assistance on behalf of Howard County prior to the storm. With the storm now over, Pinkerton confirmed that a formal written disaster declaration has been filed to seek state aid and support.
According to the Disaster Emergency Proclamation, Howard County experienced a severe sleet and ice storm on Saturday, January 24, 2026. The proclamation states that no fatalities were reported and one injury occurred, but the storm caused considerable damage to both public and private property.
Judge Pinkerton said the declaration was necessary to protect public health, reduce further damage, ensure public safety, and provide emergency relief. Citing the Arkansas Emergency Services Act of 1973, the proclamation officially declares Howard County a disaster area and authorizes the implementation of the County Emergency Operations Plan.
The disaster declaration will remain in effect for 120 days unless extended by Judge Pinkerton.
County officials say the declaration allows Howard County to pursue additional aid and resources as recovery efforts continue.
