Howard County Health Improvement Coalition Meets
The Howard County Health Improvement Coalition held their Annual Meeting at the Sunset Church of Christ last week.
Coalition members reported only two of the county’s three school district participated in the annual Arkansas Preventative Needs Assessment Student Survey. According to Sarah Powell of the Arkansas Department of Health, it’s important for all school district’s to participate because it helps the county apply for grants that benefit the residents of Howard County. Powell reported the Howard County Health Improvement Coalition has received about $500,000 in grant monies.
The Nutrition Committee reported they had 16 vendors participating at the Farmer’s Market. They said 780 people visited and purchased produce from the market. 132 people visited the demonstration organic garden and 120 children attended the summer Kidz Klub.
The Nashville Farmer’s Market also participates in the state’s WIC and SNAP programs.
The Physical Activity Committee discussed the sidewalk program that will connect the schools, to the park, farmer’s market and hospital.
Powell stated the coalition plans to work on developing the Physical Activity Committee by adding more committee volunteers.
The Safety Committee reported they have taught over 1,000 people the Stop the Bleed program and serve approximately 120 young parents the Safety Baby Shower program.
Gayla Lacefield reported the coalition needs additional infant child seats if they plan to continue the Safety Baby Shower program.
