Howard County Voters to Decide on School Board Races, Millage Rates, and Sales Tax Continuation in May 13 Election

Several items will be on the ballot for the upcoming School Election on Tuesday, May 13 in Howard County, including two contested school board races and a 1 percent Sales and Use Tax initiative.

Howard County voters will be asked to approve the school millage for the four school districts in Howard County. Nashville School District patrons will be voting to approve a 31.7 mills, which represents the same rate presently being collected. The Dierks School District millage is 43 mills. The Mineral Springs millage is 34 mills and the Cossatot River School District millage is 44 mills. These three millage amounts are also presently being collected.

There are two contested school board races in the county.

D.J. Hibberd is challenging Tem Gunter for the Nashville Zone 2 position. Gunter is the incumbent and has been serving for the past five years. Phillip Glasgow II is challenging Jaron Tipton for an at-large position on the Dierks School Board. Tipton has served as the Dierks School Board president for the past three-years.

Howard County officials are also asking voters to approve the continuation of the current 1 percent Sales and Use Tax that currently is paying the bond payments for the construction of the current Howard Memorial Hospital. The tax is set to sunset once the bond is paid off this year, however, officials are asking voters to allow the county to continue to collect the tax for several different projects.

A portion of the funds will be divided among the four municipalities in Howard County. Ten percent of the county’s portion will go the Developing Howard County for economic growth and ten percent will be used for the maintenance of the hospital and the rest will be used for general purposes of the county government.

Early voting will begin Tuesday, May 6 at the Carter Day building on North Main Street in Nashville and run through Monday, May 12. The vote center will be open from 8 am to 4:30. On election day, voters can cast their vote at the Carter Day Center in Nashville and the Dierks Community Center in Dierks from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.

The last day to register to vote in the May 13th School Election is Monday, April 14th.
