LEGACY BOYS FEEL LUCKY ON FRIDAY 13th
Legacy Academy Warriors and Lady Warriors travelled to Hot Springs for their next to last road trip this season. The Sevier County school has six remaining games on their regular season schedule before tournament play begins five of those are at home in Lockesburg. On Friday, January 13th the senior boys, senior girls, and junior boys were hosted by Gospel Light Christian School in Hot Springs. The Warriors defeated the Lions, and Legacy’s junior Warriors also won their game. The Lady Warriors lost 45-43 in a heartbreaker in the last moment of the game.
In Senior boys’ action, the Warriors had to work hard against the Lions who showed up with a strong inside presence, where they had more height; yet the host only led in the game for the first two minutes before Legacy took the lead and never let go of it. The first period ended with the Warriors up 16-12. They had their best quarter in the second when they outscored the Hot Springs team 23-15, going to the locker room at halftime with a 39-27 lead. An even paced second half of the ballgame saw the Warriors win 82-71. The Warriors hit 9 three-pointers, with four coming from Senior Ethan Gallagher, giving the team 43% made outside the perimeter. Gallagher led scoring for both teams with 40 points, 19 rebounds, and 9 assists. He also had 4 steals, blocks, and deflections. Manolo Vazquez gave the Warriors 12 points, followed by 9 from Layne Schroer. Schroer gave the Warriors 6 rebounds. Eli Mitchell had 8 points, followed by 6 from Joshua Tucker, 4 from Ozzy Toledano, and 3 from Everrette Martz. Toledano also took two charges for the Lockesburg boys. Colton Hegewood was the high scorer for the Lions with 16. The Warriors improved their season record to 20-4.
In Senior girls’ action, in was a battle all game long between the Lady Warriors and the Lady Lions. The Hot Springs girls outscored Legacy 13-9 in the first period, while Legacy outpaced the Lady Lions 13-6 in the second. The Sevier County girls were up 22-19 at the half. Legacy, led by Sophomore scorer Oaklee Lofton continued led through the third quarter but saw the Lady Lions grabbed the game with seconds to go winning 45-42.
Lofton game the girls 23 points and 9 rebounds. Dori Bartek had 8 points and an impressive 11 rebounds, Lilly Tucker had 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 deflections, while 7th grader Libbie Bartek played up giving the Lady Warriors 5 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 steals! AK Horton led the scoring for the Lady Lions with 16 points.
In the Junior Boys’ game the Warriors took the lead right out the gate and held it all night. The Warriors led by 7 at the half, but didn’t allow the junior Lions to score a single point in the entire 3rd period. Legacy’s boys won the game 56-41. Manolo Vazquez gave the Warriors 37 of those points, along with 15 rebounds. Silas Lofton had 13 points, while Jude Gallagher gave the team 6 points and a big 12 rebounds. Justise Burton grabbed 5 boards for the Warriors. Noah Lyles of the junior Gospel Light team led the home team with 22 points.
Legacy plays a lot of basketball this week. All four teams play at home against Garrett Memorial on Tuesday. Junior boys have advanced in the Umpire junior tournament and play Wednesday, while both senior teams play at home Thursday and Friday night. Thursday v. Mineral Springs and Friday against Eagletown. Friday night’s games verses Eagletown will include a salute to the history of Lockesburg’s Blue Darter basketball.
