Mineral Springs City Council Approves Grant Application, Discusses Department Needs

The Mineral Springs City Council held their regular monthly meeting Monday, addressing several items related to city operations, grants, and upcoming community events.

During the meeting, council members granted Mayor Pro Tem Vera Marks permission to apply for a 50/50 matching grant that could be used for specific needs across city departments. Fire Chief Chris Hostetler told the council the grant would be especially beneficial for the fire department, noting the need for additional self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs).

Marks also reported that the city’s recent grant application for playground improvements was denied. She further explained that because the city is still undergoing an audit, officials are currently unable to complete budget reconciliation.

Police Chief Francisco Mercado introduced newly hired officer Braydon Newberry, who will replace Alex Gamble. Mercado said Newberry is scheduled to attend the police academy in May.

Mercado also asked the council to begin considering an upgrade to the department’s report-writing system, which would cost approximately $17,000. He noted that he plans to seek grant funding to help cover the expense.

In other business, the council agreed to move the annual “Boo in the Shoe” event back to Main Street and to hold it on Halloween. The Fall Festival will instead be scheduled for a separate date. The motion was made by Alderman Earle Hadden and seconded by Frankie Harris, with all council members in agreement.
