Nashville City Council Appoints New Alderman, Reviews February Finances

The Nashville City Council held their regular monthly meeting yesterday with all members present except Alderman Brent Thompson.

In the first order of business, the council approved Alderman Vivian Wright’s recommendation to appoint Khalid Benson to fill her Ward 3, Seat 2 position. Following the approval, Mayor Larry Dunaway officially swore in Benson.

Wright took a moment during the meeting to thank fellow council members for their support and collaboration over her 27 years of service to the city.

Finance Director Kimberly Green presented the February financial report, noting total revenue of $1,009,686.14 and expenditures of $814,290.02. The city ended the month with revenues exceeding expenditures by $195,396.02.

Green also highlighted several extraordinary expenses, including a $49,265 transfer to district court. This amount represents half of a $98,530 invoice covering 50% of district clerk salaries and 40% of operating expenses paid to Howard County. The Parks Department reported a $64,000 expense for mulch, brush, and small tree clearing for a new parking lot, paid to Andrew Marshall. Additionally, $16,000 from the Franchise Fund was transferred to the street department for operating expenses.

In sales tax revenue, city collections decreased by 8%, or $13,160 less than February 2025, while county sales tax saw a 1% increase, totaling $992 more than the same period last year.

Mayor Dunaway also addressed certificates of deposit, as well as the water and sewer fund and current water rates.

Following discussion, the council unanimously approved moving $300,000 from the Water Sewer Fund into a six-month certificate of deposit with Diamond Bank. The motion was made by Alderman Joe Hoen and seconded by Phil Jones.
